An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Felix Tries to Rest, the 1924 Otto Messemer silent animated animation cartoon comedy short ("A Pat Sullivan Comic") starring Felix the Cat, who is a feline cartoon character (he had a "Magic Bag of Tricks") created in 1923 by animator Pat Sullivan, but many feel that most or all of the credit for Felix's actual creation should go to Otto Messmer, who was the lead animator for Sullivan at his studio (and who drew most of the early Felix cartoons, comic strips, and posters). The comic strip first appeared in 1923, and cartoons and toys quickly followed. Felix is one of the most recognized cartoon characters in film history. The franchise has spawned comics, television shows, and various merchandise. Felix WAS the most popular cartoon character in the world in the 1920s, but Pat Sullivan made a crucial error when he did not think that his cartoons needed sound, and Mickey Mouse did have sound, and he quickly supplanted Felix as the most popular cartoon character, and even though sound Felix cartoons were then created, he had lost much popularity. However, in the 1950s, new Felix cartoons were created, and he has been the subject of many cartoons and endless toys and other licensed items ever since! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this one-sheet, which sold for $6,350, and the buyer of that poster has now reconsigned it to us, so this is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned! Also note that this wonderful one-sheet was from the second year that Felix was in cartoons, and the cartoon was distributed by M.J. Winkler, who would later distribute Walt Disney's "Alice" cartoons. It has wonderful art of a worried Felix parachuting into the ocean with a fearsome shark-like sea creature waiting for him to descend, and it has the ironic title of "Felix Tries To Rest"! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had two small circular areas of paper loss near the center, in the blue background area. It had some tiny bits of paper loss in the left half of the bottom horizontal fold and in the bottom quarter of the vertical fold, with a much lesser amount of wear on the other folds and in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
