A Paperbacked German Special Poster (measures 22 3/4" x 33 1/2" [58 x 85 cm]) (Learn More) Winterhilfswerk Des Deutschen Volkes 1933-34 (literally translates to "Winter Relief of the German People 1933-34"), the 1933 German poster (with a tagline that translates to "Donate to fight against hunger and cold") encouraging people to donate to a Nazi charity. Note that this poster features Ludwig Hohlwein art of a man donating coins with a swastika in the background. Ludwig Hohlwein was a German artist from the 1890s until his passing in 1949. He is one of the best known German poster artists (though his reputation suffered because of his work with the Nazis)! Initially an architect student who illustrated for newspapers, he went on to design book decorations, booklets, and advertising posters. He joined the Nazi Regime in 1933 after refusing an offer to emigrate to the United States, and this poster was one of the first (perhaps even the first) that he designed for the Nazis, which gave them a legitimacy that they had not formerly had. Poster historian Alain Weill says "Hohlwein was the most prolific and brilliant German posterist of the 20th century. Beginning with his first efforts, Hohlwein found his style with disconcerting facility. It would vary little for the next forty years. The drawing was perfect from the start, nothing seemed alien to him, and in any case, nothing posed a problem for him. His figures are full of touches of color and a play of light and shade that brings them out of their background and gives them substance". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Ludwig Hohlwein Important Added Info: Note that our consignor tells us this poster (which we have never auctioned before) was created in three sizes, and that this is the "medium" size, that measures 22 3/4" X 33 1/2". There is a larger size that our consignor saw auctioned in 2013, and it sold for $13,000! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had an 11" tear in the upper left border, extending into the shoulder and chest of the man, but below his chin (see our image). It also had an extra fold near the middle at a slight diagonal under the regular middle fold. It had tiny paper loss and a 1 1/2" tear in the lower left blank border. It had smudges and creases around the edges, with a few smudges and scuffs scattered in the image, and a few tiny tears by parts of the folds. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
