An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22") (Learn More) This Gun For Hire, the classic 1942 Frank Tuttle spy espionage counterfeiting murder crime film noir ("Killer without a conscience! Lover without a heart?"; "Based on the novel by Graham Greene") starring Veronica Lake (as a magician who does card tricks!), Robert Preston, Laird Cregar, Alan Ladd, Tully Marshall, Mikhail Rasumny, Marc Lawrence, Pamela Blake, Emmett Vogan, and Victor Kilian. Note that Alan Ladd was fourth billed in this movie (he had been in movies for several years, including in Citizen Kane, but he had mostly tiny roles), but this movie made him a major star. It is incredibly fortunate that the U.S. poster artist chose to feature only fourth-billed Ladd and first-billed Lake on the one-sheet, making it one of the most desirable U.S. posters! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that, as with the one-sheet for this movie, the poster designer at Paramount made the brilliant decision to feature fourth-billed Alan Ladd prominently on this window card, along with a very sexy large image of Veronica Lake, and I don't believe this image appears on any other poster from the movie! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had pinholes, creases, smudges, scuffs, and some tears around the edges of the poster. There were some smudges in Lake's shoulder and a tiny faint stain in her cheek. There was a 6" horizontal tear in the top right of the image, beginning just above the heads of the policemen and extending into the background below the second "R" of "ROBERT". There was damage in the heads of the last two small policemen, and there has been restoration in that area. There were a few tiny dot stains and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was well backed, and the restorer chose to do a "minimal" restoration, to avoid the poster having a "heavily restored" look. I think this worked quite well, because you can see signs of the defects and the restoration of the defects from close up, but from any reasonable viewing distance, they are not very noticeable or distracting at all.
