The original building was built to showcase King Leopold II's Congo Free State in the 1897 World Exhibition. A new building was officially opened by King Albert I in 1910 and named the Museum of the Belgian Congo and in 1952, the adjective "Royal" was added. In 1960, following the independence of the Congo, the museum's name was changed to its current title: the Royal Museum for Central Africa. Artist: Jean van Noten Important Added Info: Note that this Belgian museum poster (which was made in the 1950s, between 1952 and 1959, when the name of the museum was the "Royal Museum of Belgian Congo") has really striking art of a devil's flower mantis (one of the largest species of praying mantis). If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking?
