8 Original Vintage Theatrical English Movie Lobby Cards (LCs; measure 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

Brief Encounter, the classic 1945 (released in the U.S. and Canada in 1946) David Lean (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) English romantic infidelity melodrama ("A story of the most precious moments in a woman's life!"; "Living a love that was not theirs"; "Thrill to Rachmaninoff Concerto No 2 as played by Eileen Joyce"; based on the play by Noel Coward; about two people who are married to others who accidentally meet each other and are irresistibly drawn to each other, but are decent people who want to avoid having an affair; many people, myself included, consider this one of the handful of the finest movies ever made!) starring Celia Johnson ("Whose performance was voted the best of the year 1946 by the New York Critics"; nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway, Joyce Carey, Cyril Raymond, and Valentine Dyall

Important Added Info: Note that these lobby cards represent a real mystery. They appear to be English lobby cards, but they have a similar printing quality to that of lobby cards used in Canadian theaters in the 1940s. They were originally found in Canada, which would make it real possible that they are Canadian lobby cards, but there is no way we know to tel for sure. So we are leaving them as English lobby cards (sent to Canada when the film was first shown), but please do not bid on them unless you can accept that they may be Canadian lobby cards. If they ARE English, then they are "country of origin". If they ARE Canadian, then they would be from 1946, when the movie was first released there. We wish we had other examples of these cards to compare these to, but the only other cards from this that we ever sold was this very set, which we auctioned 21 years ago! If anyone knows more about these, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: good to very good. The card with Howard staring at Johnson while they are standing has an enlarged staple hole in the center with a tiny one next to it, and it has a small tear in the border. The card with them riding in the car has creases in the right of the top border. The card with them standing in an alleyway has faint stains in the middle of the right border. The card with Raymond staring at Johnson has a tiny pinhole in each star's nose. The card with Johnson staring at the child in bed has an enlarged tack hole in the lower part of the image. The card with the two stars in the rowboat and the card with Johnson staring at the policeman are in the best condition of all the cards. The card with Dyall and Howard has a small brown stain in Howard's nose and a horizontal crease running across much of the top of the background area. All eight cards have some light rippling around the edges. One might choose to perform restoration to any or all of the above defects (with or without backing), but I can also imagine many collectors displaying these just as they are. Please look closely at our super-sized images to see the exact defects we described above.
