An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Stark Mad, the 1929 Lloyd Bacon South America Mayan jungle expedition gorilla mystery crime thriller (based on the story by Jerome Kingston; about explorers looking for an ancient Mayan temple, but when they find it, it is guarded by a giant gorilla) starring H.B. Warner, Louise Fazenda, Jacqueline Logan, Henry B. Walthall, Claude Gillingwater, John Miljan, George Beranger, and Charles Gemora (as the gorilla!). Note that starting in 1929 and continuing into the 1940s, Charles Gemora played gorillas in many movies, likely because he owned a gorilla suit, and could do a somewhat convincing job portraying a gorilla. This movie is the earliest one we have seen with Gemora playing a gorilla. Just a few years later, Ray 'Crash' Corrigan would also start playing gorillas, and no doubt they competed for roles in every movie requiring a gorilla! Also, note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.
