An Unfolded French Travel Poster (measures 24 1/4" x 39 1/4" [62 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) The Compagnie Generale Transatlantique (typically known overseas as the French Line or Transat) was a French shipping company which was founded in 1855 by the brothers Emile and Issac Pereire under the name Compagnie Generale Maritime. The company was entrusted by the French government to transport mail to North America, and in 1861, the name of the company was changed to Compagnie Generale Transatlantique. After a period of trials and errors in the late 19th century, the company gained fame in the 1910s and 1930s with its prestigious ocean liners such as SS Paris, SS Ile de France, and especially SS Normandie. Contrary to what its name suggests, the company was not content with operating just in the North Atlantic route. It also offered service to Central America and even, for a time, the Pacific coast. From the beginning of the 20th century, it offered crossings between Marseille and Algiers, creating a tourist circuit in North Africa in the 1920s. In the 1930s, the company briefly became involved in aviation through Air France Translatlantique. Other than operating ocean liners, the company also had a significant fleet of freighters. Artist: J. Jacquelin Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning! Note that the S.S. France was a ocean liner which was put into service in February of 1962. At the time of her construction, the 1037 ft vessel was the longest passenger ship ever built, a record that remained unchallenged until the construction of the 1132 ft RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2004. The ship was later purchased by Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) in 1979, renamed SS Norway and underwent significant modifications that better suited her for cruising duties. She was renamed SS Blue Lady and sold to be scrapped in 2006, and scrapping was completed in late 2008. Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has a few tears of varying lengths at lower right, some surface paper loss at upper right and there is some slight discoloration at left (in the blank area to the left of the red circle) and there is a tiny patch under the art of the ship. The very rare poster could display well on its own, but after a relatively simple linenbacking it would look great! Learn More about condition grades
