An Original 1956 (from the first release of this movie in Italy) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian Movie Poster (measures 19" x 39" [48 x 99 cm]) (Learn More) Carmen Jones, the 1954 Otto Preminger romantic love triangle musical ("Something Really New! Something Truly Different!"; "Books and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, 2nd"; a re-telling of Bizet's Carmen opera, with black African Americans in all the lead roles) starring Dorothy Dandridge (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Carmen Jones), Harry Belafonte, Pearl Bailey, Olga James, Joe Adams, Marilyn Horne (who provided the singing voice for Dandridge), and Marvin Hayes (who provided the singing voice for Joe Adams). Note that this was the first movie that Preminger hired Saul Bass to do the title treatment for, and he DID an image used on the cover of the pressbook, but he did NOT do any images for any of the U.S. posters. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this first release Italian poster! It measures 19" x 39", which is an unusual size for Italian posters (we recently auctioned a first release Italian poster for "Boy on a Dolphin", which measured 14" x 39", another unusual size). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had minor wear on the folds and paper loss in the blank corners. It had a few small tears in the borders, with an uneven 3" tear in the upper right border, extending into the top right corner of the red background. It had some scuffs in the black silhouette area, more so in the bottom half. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
