An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 14 1/4" x 22 1/4" [36 x 57 cm]) (Learn More) The U.S. Air Service Needs Auto Mechanics and Chauffeurs, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster ("See U.S. Army recruiting office before December 13") encouraging men to join the U.S. Air Service. The United States Army Air Service (also known as the U.S. Air Service) was the aerial warfare service component of the United States Army between 1918 and 1926 and a forerunner of the United States Air Force. What a cool piece of history this is! Probably few people living today realize that the U.S. Air Force was once called the "U.S. Air Service", and that they had a need for auto mechanics and chauffeurs (but in those early days of aviation, they probably did more driving of cars than flying of airplanes). If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this particular poster was displayed at the "Forbes Library" in Northampton, Massachusetts on December 13, 1917, and that library stamped its address in three places above the date, and they also stamped the date and the library name twice in the right. This was all done in 1917, when the poster was used and is part of the poster! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster has slight darkening in the right and bottom, with tiny paper loss in the lower right blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. After it was backed, it acquired a 2" tear in the middle left, extending into the "A" of "AUTO" (any restorer could re-glue this area without re-backing the poster). Learn More about condition grades
