Date Sold 12/2/2010Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Grapes of Wrath, the classic 1940 John Ford (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) Depression era family-leaves-the-Dust-Bowl-to-find-a-better-life-in-California melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the classic novel by John Steinbeck; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck) starring Henry Fonda (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as Tom Joad), Jane Darwell (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film; as Ma Joad), Charley Grapewin (as Grandpa Joad), Russell Simpson (as Pa Joad), John Carradine (as Jim Casy), Dorris Bowdon (as Rose-of-Sharon Rivers, spelled as "Rosasharn" in the movie credits), Zeffie Tilbury (as Grandma Joad), Frank Darien (as Uncle John Joad), Eddie Quillan (as Connie Rivers), John Qualen (as Muley Graves), Kitty McHugh (as the diner waitress, in one of the movie's most poignant scenes), Darryl Hickman (as Winfield Joad), and Shirley Mills (as Ruthie Joad). Note that this is one of the very rare cases where a really great book is turned into a really great movie! It is not entirely faithful to the book, but it certainly captures the "spirit" of the book. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that both of the one-sheets for this classic movie are somewhat disappointing, with little color and mostly artwork that does not depict the characters from the movie. But this great half-sheet (which we have never seen or sold before) has a wonderful "line up" image of the stars in character, looking as people worn down by The Great Depression would surely pose in such a portrait! Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good to very good. The poster was folded once in each direction and there are creases along both foldlines. There is a razor cut in the middle of the right border that extends 1" to the left at the top and bottom of the cut. Apparently, the person who started making the cut changed their mind and then they put brown paper tape on the back of that cut. There are some creases, smudges, and pinholes around the edges of the poster. There is a brown water stain with some dot stains around it in the top left, at the bottom of the "F. Z" of "DARRYL F. ZANUCK". There are some creases and scuffs scattered in the image and two smudges in the bottom of the 20th Century-Fox logo. The poster has had no restoration of any kind other than the tape repair of the razor cut. I would think many collectors could happily display this great poster just as it is, or certainly any talented restorer could paperback the poster, and after proper restoration, it will look wonderful!
