Genosse Ernst Thalmann (literally translates to "Comrade Ernst Thalmann"), the 1980 East German poster featuring an image of Thalmann in military uniform with the raised fist symbol on his arm. Ernst Thalmann was the leader of the Communist Party of Germany during the Weimar Republic. He was arrested by the Gestapo with Hitler's rise to power in 1933, and was held in solitary confinement for eleven years. He was then transferred to Buchenwald concentration camp, where is was shot and immediately cremated.
