eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result #003 GAY DIVORCEE 1/2sh '34 Astaire & Rogers Date Sold 11/6/2001Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Half-Sheet (measures 22" x 28") (Learn More) The Gay Divorcee, the 1934 Mark Sandrich romantic musical dancing comedy ("The King and Queen of 'Carioca'"; "Introducing the new dance sensation 'The Continental'"; "The stage hit of two continents... ten times a gorgeous on the screen!"; "Right now the whole United States is whistling its gay, enchanting tunes!"; "The music marvel of the stage - 10 times as gorgeous on the screen"; "With the stars of 'Flying Down to Rio'"; "A screen version of the spicy comedy that kept New York and London in stitches for two seasons... with three members of the original cast."; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a woman staying at a resort until her divorce is final, and a man who is also staying there who is madly in love with her) starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Alice Brady, Edward Everett Horton, Erik Rhodes, Eric Blore, and Betty Grable. Note that this movie was based on the Cole Porter play titled "Gay Divorce", but oddly, only one of the songs from the play was used in the movie. One of the original songs in the movie was "The Continental", which won the first Best Song Academy Award! Also note that Erik Rhodes was a Broadway stage actor who had a great minor part as a heavily accented European in the stage version of this movie, and he was brought to Hollywood to recreate that role in this movie version. Over the next five years, he made a couple dozen film roles, almost always playing a similar part, which was kind of funny, since he was actually from Oklahoma, but he was an expert in "foreign" accents. He served in World War II, and then returned to the Broadway stage, and never made any more movies. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 19 1/2" x 25 1/2" (but curved around the corners). It comes from a newly discovered collection of 18 early 1930s half-sheets, all of which had the blank borders trimmed (sometimes the trimming went into the image). We have left all the posters exactly as they were found, both so that the eventual buyer could see exactly what condition the poster was in, but also so that they could decide how much restoration to do, if any, and to choose which restorer to use.
There are many rare and desirable titles (some of these may be the only surviving copy!), and it would not surprise us if some of these posters end up (restored and looking mint) in some fancy big city auctions, going for jillions of dollars! But there is every possibility that some lucky eBayers may get to purchase one or more of these for bargain prices as all of them start at $2.99, with no reserve! However, these posters clearly have real defects, so please don't bid on any of them unless you can live with them as is, or are willing to have them restored (if properly restored, they will look wonderful). Condition: fair. In addition to being trimmed, the poster has the following defects: It appears this poster had an oval shaped border, as the person who trimmed it trimmed each corner in a curved fashion, as it appears that the trimmed portion included only a small amount of additional image area. There is an additional piece off of the upper right corner and another similar-sized piece out of the left middle of the bottom edge (under the "AY" of "GAY"). There is a small horizontal piece off of the left of the top edge. There is a small area of paper loss below the "R" of "ROGERS". There was once a large paper snipe over the left middle of the poster and remnants of it can be seen running from below the "ERS" of "ROGERS" into the shoulders of the Astaire figure. There is also part of a snipe between the figures of Astaire and Rogers which reads "Fred Astaire and Ginger". There are many small tears near the edges of the poster. There are water stains throughout the bottom right of the poster, but they are most evident between the figures of Astaire and Rogers and in the letters "ORC" of "DIVORCEE". Clearly, this poster has lots and lots of defects! A professional restorer could surely make this look great, but it would be a complicated restoration, so be sure to take that into account when you place your bid on this poster!
