An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 24 1/4" x 33 1/2" [62 x 85 cm]) (Learn More) Bird of Paradise, the 1932 King Vidor South Seas tropical island jungle romantic adventure thriller ("It happened in Hawaii!"; from the play by Richard Walton Tully; about a handsome South Seas sailor who meets the daughter of an island chief, and he falls in love with her, and he plans to stay on the island with her, but the chief tells him that his daughter is promised to a nearby prince, and that she is "taboo" to the sailor; of course, the sailor and the girl defy her father, and go to live on a deserted island, but she becomes afraid that her betrayal will cause the volcano to erupt, and when it does, the island men come to take the daughter back and sacrifice her; the girl and the sailor are both captured and almost die, but his ship returns and rescues them, but the girl fears that her people will die if she leaves, so she returns and throws herself into the volcano!) starring Dolores Del Rio, Joel McCrea, John Halliday, Lon Chaney Jr. (billed as "Creighton Chaney"), Richard 'Skeets' Gallagher, Bert Roach, and Agostino Borgato. Note that this movie has massive similarity to Albert S. Rogell's "Aloha", made the previous year. We don't know if one movie inspired the other, or if there was any controversy at this time over the similarity of the two movies. Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare "pre-War" Belgian poster. Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had paper loss at the middle crossfold and small paper loss at the other two crossfolds. There were tears and tiny areas of paper loss across the middle fold, and in the bottom half of the vertical foldline, with a much lesser amount of wear on the other folds. There were some pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges of the poster. There were two small stains in Del Rio's cheek. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well, but the restorer did not touch up the two "beauty marks" on Del Rio's cheek, because they thought they were part of the printing (any talented restorer could now touch them up, if the new owner desired, but most viewers of the poster would make the same mistake the restorer did!).
