Original Hardcover Book (Photoplay Edition) (Learn More) The Phantom of the Opera, the classic 1925 Rupert Julian Universal silent Paris France opera house murder mystery horror thriller ("Carl Laemmle presents Gaston Leroux's magnificent story of Parisian gaiety and intrigue"; "Weird! Wild! Wonderful!"; from the novel by Gaston Leroux, which was published in a serialized format in 1909 and 1910) starring Lon Chaney Sr. (in the title role as Erik, The Phantom), Norman Kerry (as Vicomte Raoul de Chagny), Mary Philbin (as Christine Daae), Arthur Edmund Carewe (as Ledoux), Gibson Gowland (as Simon Buquet), Carla Laemmle (uncredited as one of the ballerinas), Alexander Bevani, and "5000 others". Note that this movie was remade in 1943 with Claude Rains as the Phantom and Susannah Foster as Christine. In 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber made a musical stage play version, which is perhaps the most successful stage play of all time, and is still running on Broadway! In 2004, Webber's musical was made into a movie, with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. Also note that as they did with many of their major productions at this time, Universal created two completely different sets of lobby cards, with different designs and two title cards, so there are sixteen first release cards, two sets of eight. This copy of the book includes the original dustjacket. It is uncommon to find these Photoplay Edition books with their dustjacket, as they often became frayed and were thrown out over the years. Condition: good to very good. The book itself is in fine condition. There is slight staining on the inside blank front cover and paper loss on the blank inside cover near the spine. There is slight discoloration on the top edge of most of the pages, but it is not visible when looking at the pages. Pages 165 through 187 have the lower right blank edge creased. The dustjacket is in good to very good condition. There is a 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" piece missing from the top of the spine which loses the "T" of "THE", the "PHA" of "PHANTOM", the "OF" of "OF" and the "OP" of "OPERA". There is another much smaller piece missing from the top of the spine that does not affect the writing. There is a 1/4" x 1/4" piece missing from the upper left corner of the back cover. There is a 1 1/2" tear at the top right of the cover that extends into the "ERA" of "OPERA". There is small paper loss to the left of the "O" of "OF". There are many other creases and tears in the dustjacket, but most are in the edges, and have little effect on the image. The jacket is in a protective plastic sleeve.
