Date Sold 6/25/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Sergeant Murphy, the 1938 B. Reeves Eason Army military horse racing equine melodrama ("An Army horse in a thrilling race"; "Action, suspense and romance!"; from the story by Sy Bartlett) starring Ronald Reagan (in his third movie role!), Mary Maguire, Donald Crisp, Ben Hendricks Jr., Max Hoffman Jr., Emmett Vogan, and Sergeant Murphy the horse (in the title role). Note that Ronald Reagan had appeared in two movies as a radio announcer (which he had done for a living prior to that), but he got a big break when James Cagney turned down the lead role in this movie, and he was given the lead instead, which led to his major movie career and later into politics and the presidency! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare "test print" of this lobby card! Before lobby cards were printed, they would print some samples, and often they would do so on the backs of rejected cards, to save on paper. Very few such test prints survive! This particular card was printed on the back of a partially printed card for "Forbidden Valley" that had part of a poster printed on it as well (see our images of the front and back). This was printed by Associated Displays Corporation which was a company based in New York City. Before it was discovered by noted poster dealer/historian Walter Reuben, collectors did not know the name of this company (and thought it to be located in the Midwest), and it is often referred to as the "other company" (and we will continue to refer to it that way, since collectors know it that way). From 1936 to roughly 1941, this company printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts, half-sheets, three-sheets, 40x60s and stills) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The items almost always feature a tiny legal disclaimer and cast credits only. The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They did this by combining elements from different film scenes onto one poster or card. Sometimes, "other company" posters have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters. Condition: good. There are ink smudges scattered in the left half of the front of the card, which surely occurred during printing. Learn More about condition grades
