Date Sold 10/15/2009Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked English Stage Play Poster (measures 19 1/4" x 29 1/2") (Learn More) The Forty Thieves, the 1900s English stage play production. Note that this poster features cool artwork of an Arabian female (possibly a female Ali Baba?), and is similar to 1930s English stage play posters we have sold which are also based on classic tales. Those posters were used for local Christmas pantomimes (that were very professional productions) that were held all over England for many years. In those pantomimes, it was common for women to play boys' roles, and for men to play the roles of unlikable women (like witches and mean old ladies!). Therefore, it seems quite possible that this poster is from a much earlier pantomime, but also with a woman playing the lead role. If anyone knows more about this play or this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: What IS linenbacking? "Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction either was NOT linenbacked very well, OR the poster had more significant defects (you can tell which type it is by reading our written comments about the poster's condition). In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image! Condition: good. The poster had a fold in each direction with minor wear on the folds. There was something stuck to the center of the image and it was removed, causing a 1/2" x 2" area of surface paper loss. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, onto a thin linen, but the backer did not address the surface paper loss.
