An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Le joueur d'echecs (released the U.S. in 1939 as "The Chess Player"), the 1938 Jean Dreville French fantasy melodrama (based on the novel by Henry Dupuis-Mazuel; there are two plots in this movie which come together; one concerns a young Polish woman who wants to single-handedly free her country from Russia, and the other concerns a toymaker who makes life-sized "automatons", which are basically robots, and he ends up helping to hide the Polish woman from the Russians) starring Francoise Rosay, Conrad Veidt, Bernard Lancret, Micheline Francey, and Paul Cambo. Note that the source novel was written in 1926, and was first filmed as a silent movie in 1927. But the technology of the time did not allow for convincing robots, whereas this 1938 sound remake had excellent robots and special effects. This movie is forgotten today, except by major film buffs, and movie paper of any kind from it is extremely scarce. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
