An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Boston Blackie, the 1923 Scott R. Dunlap Massachusetts silent detective crime mystery thriller ("Adapted from the story 'The Water Cross' by Jack Boyle") starring William Russell (in the title role as Boston Blackie), Eva Novak, Frank Brownlee, Otto Matieson, W.C. Robinson, and Fred Esmelton. Note that this is one of ten silent movies made in the 1920s starring the fictional character "Boston Blackie", a reformed crook turned detective, which were based on short stories by Jack Boyle. The character was revived in 1941 with Chester Morris playing Boston Blackie, and there were 14 movies in the 1940s. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned several scene cards from this movie, but we have NEVER auctioned this title card! Note that this lobby card has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the lobby card was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that keeps the "feel" of the lobby card similar to that of the original lobby card. Some restorers prefer to paperback lobby cards on to a heavy backing, while others prefer to use a very lightweight backing. The advantage of a lightweight backing is that the card still "feels" like a regular lobby card, but a heavier backing makes restoration easier to do and less noticeable. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the card had 1" wide tape on the back of the right border and the bottom border, and there was paper loss scattered in the right border and a smaller amount in the right border. There were a few tears and smudges around the edges. Overall, the lobby card was in good condition prior to paperbacking. Someone paperbacked the card onto a very light backing, and they restored most of the above defects, but left alone the faint smudging and left alone a 1/4" tear in the left blank border, and the card displays pretty well!
