Date Sold 11/3/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Forty by Sixty Movie Poster (40x60; measures 40" x 60" [102 x 152 cm]) (Learn More) Cry of the Werewolf, the 1944 Henry Levin New Orleans Louisiana female werewolf monster gypsy horror thriller ("Shiver... as strange voodoo rites are revealed!"; "When the bells toll at midnight... Werewolves prowl the Earth!") starring Nina Foch, Stephen Crane, Osa Massen, Blanche Yurka, and Barton MacLane. Note that a year earlier, Columbia Pictures made "The Return of the Vampire" (which also included Nina Foch), which had a full fledged werewolf in it, but in this movie, the "werewolf" is actually a woman who turns into a literal wolf, making it much more like Val Lewton's "Cat People"! The opening credits have a wolf eating them as they appear on the screen! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this 40x60, which has a completely different image! It is unbelievably rare! National Screen Service offered 40x60s on almost every movie in the 1930s and 1940s, but very few theaters ordered them (surely because they cost many times what a three-sheet cost, due to the heavier paper). Very few 40x60s survive from ANY movies from the mid 1940s and earlier. There is information at the bottom of this 40x60 that says "THIS IS THE PROPERTY OF NATIONAL SCREEN SERVICE CORP. LICENSED FOR DISPLAY ONLY IN CONNECTION WITH THE EXHIBITION OF THIS PICTURE AT YOUR THEATER. PLEASE PACK AND RETURN IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE CLOSE OF THE CURRENT WEEK'S SHOW." Obviously, this further explains why these are so rare, because theaters had to return them! Condition: good. The poster was never folded. There are many faint smudges and scuffs scattered throughout the poster, typical of silkscreen 40x60s of this period. There is a 4" tear in the top center, with a vertical scuff below it. There are many creases, small tears, and some small paper loss scattered down the right edge of the poster, but mostly in the blank border. There are creases and tiny tears scattered down the left border, but not nearly as much as the right border. See our image to get a good sense of the exact condition of this extremely rare poster.
