An Autographed Letter (measures 5 1/4" x 7 3/4" [13 x 20 cm]) (Learn More)

Octavus Roy Cohen was a writer specializing in works dealing with black African Americans from the 1910s to the 1950s. He wrote over 250 stories covering comedies, detective fiction, and much more. Although he himself was white (born in South Carolina and lived in Alabama), his stories about black African Americans gained popularity after being published in the Saturday Evening Post and were adapted into a series of short films by Al Christie featuring actors Charles Olden, Spencer Williams Jr., Evelyn Preer, and Edward Thompson. Because most of his stories used dialect that is considered derogatory by modern standards, Cohen is not well remembered today, but he did much to bring black African Americans into the forefront of American fiction. Cohen passed away in 1959 at the age of 67.
Important Added Info: Note that this letter has been personally autographed (signed) by Octavus Roy Cohen! It was written by Cohen to Lodge Cunningham, who was one of the most innovative and important sound engineers in the history of film, including at the time when sound movies first began, and he was instrumental in sound being added to the film itself, rather than on transcription discs. He was involved with many great movies, and prior to the writing of this letter, he gave Octavus Roy Cohen and his wife a tour of his sound studio, and this letter was written in appreciation of that tour. Our consignor is a longtime dealer who acquired this signed item among many other purchases in his inventory, and he does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to likely be authentic.

Condition: very good to fine.
