eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result e014 ACCORDING TO MRS HOYLE one-sheet movie poster '51 Spring Byington Date Sold 3/27/2007Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) According to Mrs. Hoyle, the 1951 Jean Yarbrough crime thriller comedy ("When she turns on her CHARM... Hard guys weaken and dames go soft!"; "WHAT A GAL! She changes sinners into saints!... dames into damsels!.. muggs into men!...."; "She's got Brand New Rules for Any Game ...whether its Love, Larceny or Living!") starring Spring Byington (in the title role as Mrs. Hoyle), Anthony Caruso, Tanis Chandler (a French actress who appeared in some Hollywood movies of the 1940s, but she returned to France and became the French dubbed voice for Hollywood actresses when those movies were shown in France!), Brett King, and Stephen Chase. Note that Edmond Hoyle was an Englishman who wrote the first generally accepted rules of card games in the mid-18th century. He became the accepted authority on rules for all card games (including poker, which was not invented until 150 years after his death!), and the phrase "According to Hoyle" meant that you played strictly by the written rules of the game. It crossed over into general usage, and became a metaphor for anyone who "played by the rules". This movie obviously used a variation on that phrase for its title. Since the phrase is no longer in common usage, this reference would be lost on most modern day moviegoers! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
