Date Sold 4/16/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 11" x 17" [28 x 43 cm]; 24 pages) (Learn More) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, the 1939 Sidney Lanfield crime detective mystery thriller (based on the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) starring Richard Greene, Basil Rathbone (as Sherlock Holmes), Wendy Barrie, Nigel Bruce (as Dr. Watson), Lionel Atwill, John Carradine, Barlowe Borland, Beryl Mercer, Morton Lowry, Ralph Forbes, and Eily Malyon. Note that this was the very first of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies, produced by 20th Century-Fox. It was followed by a same year sequel, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", also from 20th Century-Fox. Fox did not make anymore of these, but in 1942, Universal bought the rights to the character and released "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror" (which brought Holmes out of the Victorian age and into the present, which greatly reduced production costs), and they quickly turned out a number of sequels in what proved to be an extremely popular series. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this pressbook from the first Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movie, and that was 9 years ago (and that example had cuts, while this example is complete and uncut)! Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Note that for the past 18 months, we have auctioned one of the most extraordinary collections of pressbooks ever assembled! What made it so extraordinary is that it contained lots and lots of extremely rare pressbooks, mostly from the 1930s and 1940s, including many that we had never auctioned before. In our last few regular auctions, we auctioned most of the last of this gigantic collection, and now, in this April Major Auction, we are auctioning the very last of them, and one quick look tells you that "we saved many of the very best for last"! This is your FINAL opportunity to buy from this extraordinary collection! Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle. There is a stamp on the cover in the top right corner from the 20th Century-Fox Legal Department, with some tiny creases at the spine and on the fold. Learn More about condition grades
