An Original Vintage English Campaign Book (measures 11 1/4" x 17 1/4" [29 x 44 cm]; 16 pages) (Learn More)

20th Century-Fox 1937-38 ("The Showman's Guide to Big Pictures"), the 1937 English campaign book published by 20th Century-Fox in 1937 to promote their movies for the upcoming year. It has 16 pages with a two-page ad for Lancer Spy and full-page ads for Dinner at the Ritz, Ali Baba Goes to Town, Wife, Doctor, and Nurse, Heidi, Danger - Love at Work, Lovely To Look At, You Can't Have Everything, Love Under Fire, and He Was Her Man. In addition, the cover has an original painting by A. Hinchliffe of Shirley Temple from Wee Willie Winkie. Note that Fox, along with all the other major studios, made annual campaign books throughout the 1910s, 1920s, and early 1930s. But when Fox ran into grave financial difficulties in 1935, they did not make a large elaborate campaign book as they had in the past. Midway through 1935, when they were about to merge with 20th Century Pictures, they created a 16-page oversized softcover campaign book, announcing the merger and their new films. We have auctioned an English example of this 1935-1936 book, but we would think there was surely a U.S. version as well. The book offered here is the one from 1937-1938, and like the one from 1935-1936, it also is English, and is also the same size and page count. Again, we would think there is surely a U.S. version of this campaign book, but we have never auctioned it (and we have never auctioned any other campaign books from 20th Century-Fox from between 1935 and 1944). In 1945, Fox started publishing magazines called "Dynamo", and each year, one of the issues was like a campaign book.

Artist: A. Hinchliffe
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this English campaign book (see above for much more about it)!

Condition: very good. This oversized campaign book was tri-folded and has creases along the folds and smudges at the spine of the front and back cover, with darkening on the bottom fold of the back cover. The centerfold pages of the book have separated. Otherwise, the book is in pretty nice condition (see our many images).
