A Linenbacked 1950s Commercial Poster (made to be sold directly to the public; measures 22" x 62" [56 x 157 cm]) (Learn More)

Marilyn Monroe is one of the greatest larger-than-life movie stars ever of the 1950s, and surely the greatest sex symbol of all time! She appeared in several memorable movies including: Some Like It Hot, The Prince & the Showgirl, All About Eve, The Asphalt Jungle, The Misfits, The Seven Year Itch, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Monkey Business, and Niagara. The last film that she worked on was Something's Got To Give in 1962. 20th Century Fox blamed Marilyn for the production being behind schedule, and fired her in June (the film was never completed). In August, she was found dead in her home from an apparent drug overdose, and her death was ruled a suicide (though there are theories that foul play was involved, and even in 2024, many people do not feel it was an "accidental" death).
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have seen different styles of this 22" x 62" door panel-like poster (which was printed on a thin paper stock). She is full-length in skimpy clothes on all of them, but there are two different printers credited for the several types, and sometimes she is brunette, and sometimes she is blonde. It would certainly seem logical that there was great demand for this poster in 1952 and that many different versions were made. Note that there was also a 1987 commercial poster with a similar image, but the poster offered here is one of the 1952 original posters. We don't know if these posters were created in conjunction with any movie, or how they were sold or distributed. We do know that one type of this poster was advertised in a 1952 issue of Popular Mechanics, and was available in a red and blue style. We have found information that the advertisement was also shown in a 1953 issue of Popular Science. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had a few tears and smudges around the edges, with a few creases scattered within the image and a few scuffs in the white background areas. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
