An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded French Two-Panel "Double Grande" Movie Poster (2p; measures 63" x 92" [160 x 234 cm]; printed in 2 pieces) (Learn More) La Bete Humaine, the 1938 (released in the U.S. in 1940) Jean Renoir French railroad train mental illness adultery romantic love triangle crime melodrama (based on the novel by Emile Zola; about a train engineer who witnesses the conductor killing his wife's lover on a train, but he says nothing because he wants the wife for himself, and he begins an affair with her, but she wants him to kill her husband so they can be together) starring Jean Gabin, Simone Simon, Fernand Ledoux, Blanchette Brunoy, Gerard Landry, and Julien Carette NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this French 2-panel poster has different art from the 4-panel for this classic movie. On the 2-panel, Gabin is staring at a distressed Simon by a harbor, and on the 4-panel, Gabin and Simon are hugging by a railroad train. In almost every other way, the two posters have the same credits and printing, so we believe both poster are surely first release posters (although this 2-panel has overprinting over the credits; see below). We are auctioning an example of each of these rare and desirable posters in this set of auctions! IMPORTANT! This is the original first release French two-panel poster from 1938. It has been overprinted with black in each corner where there was distributor information (and the distributor logo in the top right corner). We have been told two different explanations why this was done from two major French dealers. One said that it was done because the distributor "Discina" was Jewish, and when the movie was shown in France while it was occupied by the Nazis, the information relating to Discina was overprinted because of that reason. The other explanation is that the poster was reused in provincial areas of France, and was not distributed by Discina for those showings, so they overprinted the Discina information. Whichever explanation is correct, know that this IS the first release poster (and you can see what is under the overprinting, because it is not a dark black)! Condition: very good. The poster has black overprinting (see above). It has darkened on parts of the foldlines, but it barely shows, because of the dark colors of the poster. It has tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some foldlines, and in small parts of the borders. After a simple linenbacking, this poster will look incredible!
