An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded French Two-Panel "Double Grande" Movie Poster (2p; measures 62 1/4" x 91" [158 x 231 cm]; printed in 2 pieces) (Learn More) Un Chapeau de Paille d'Italie (released in the U.S. in 1931 as "The Italian Straw Hat" and "The Horse Ate the Hat"), the 1928 Rene Clair French/German silent romantic comedy farce (written by director Rene Clair; from the play by Eugene Labiche and Marc Michel; about a man on the way to his wedding, and he stops for a rest and there is a pair of lovers in the bushes, and the man's horse eats the lady's very expensive hat, and she becomes distraught, and her lover threatens to ruin the man's wedding if he can't replace the hat, which proves almost impossible to do!) starring Albert Prejean, Geymond Vital, Olga Tschechowa, Paul Ollivier, and Alex Allin. Note that this was famed French director Rene Clair's sixth movie, and it has all the great comical trademarks of his later successes. It was not released in the U.S. until 1931, three years after it was made, after Le Million and A Nous la Liberte made him an international superstar! Movie paper of any kind from this movie is beyond rare! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Rene Peron Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received this French two-panel, which is a "country of origin" poster for this partially French movie! Also note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! Also note that this French two-panel measures 62 1/4" x 91" [158 x 231 cm]. Condition: good. Note that this poster was not "linenbacked" in the modern sense! The poster was placed on to a very thin linen backing shortly after being printed (this was a common practice in the mid-1910s; in the later 1910s and 1920s they switched to using a kraftpaper backing), and after it was mounted on the linen, it was stitched around the edges. The purpose was to reinforce them, so that they would survive, when they were passed from theater to theater, and when they were put up on walls and taken down. Even though the poster was folded (linen and poster together!), the poster has not deteriorated very much, so the linen "did its job" and helped the poster survive, because it would likely be in much worse condition had it not been backed! The poster has many creases scattered throughout, with tape stains and creases around the edges. Certainly, the poster would benefit from expert professional restoration. But the poster is "all there", and after linenbacking by a talented professional, the poster will look fantastic, and it will likely require little paint restoration within the image. Still, bear in mind all of the above and look closely at our super-sized image before bidding on this rare and historic poster from one of France's greatest directors.
