Date Sold 5/11/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded Stage Play Poster (measures 28 1/2" x 42 3/4" [72 x 109 cm]) (Learn More) Blue Jeans, the 1890s stage play production ("Blue Jeans will never wear out"; "Written by Joseph Arthur author of 'The Still Alarm'") starring Robert C. Hilliard, George D. Chaplin, J.J. Wallace, Jacques Kruger, W.J. Wheeler, Alice Leigh, and Marian Mourdant Strickland. The play made its debut in 1890 in New York, and enjoyed considerable success around the United States and in revivals in the following decades. Because of this, we cannot be certain that the poster offered here is from the 1890 production, and it may be from a later production of the play (the Library of Congress dates some of the posters as 1899). Note that one of the posters for this play has one of the most classic melodrama images there is, which is of man on a table about to be cut in half by a sawmill blade! The caption under it reads "The Great Saw Mill Scene", and this may have been the first time it was used, or it could have been done prior to it. Even though this scene seems to be a classic movie scene, we have never seen a single movie poster that illustrates it! Also, a knowledgeable collector tells us that posters for this play can be seen in the background of Stanley Kubrick's 1955 film Killer's Kiss! If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good. The poster has much light rippling and slight discoloration scattered mainly in the upper half but it is slightly more noticeable on back and in the blank borders than on the front of the art. It has tears of varying lengths around the edges and the edges have all been completely backed by older, brown advertising paper tape. It also has two long strips of that tape running diagonally behind the back at center (not put there for any restoration purpose). There is a large tear at upper center that extends from the border to the art of the woman in the pink dress (see our image). It is backed by clear tape. There is small paper loss at lower right near the man in red and there is a few tears at right center. Fortunately the art is mostly "all there" and after proper restoration the poster will display well (but of course bear in mind the poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on it.)
