Date Sold 10/31/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Photographic Camera Original Negative (measures 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm]) (Learn More) Laugh, Clown, Laugh, the 1928 Herbert Brenon silent romantic love triangle circus doomed romantic melodrama ("From the play by David Belasco and Tom Cushing"; Chaney is a circus clown who adopts an orphan girl, and when she grows up, he falls in love with her, but he is 30 years older than her, and she finds someone she likes better, and he basically commits suicide doing an impossible circus stunt) starring Lon Chaney Sr., Bernard Siegel, Loretta Young (in her first real role; she was just 15 years-old at the time, and had had bit parts for 10 years previous as a child actress!), Cissy Fitzgerald, Nils Asther, and Gwen Lee. This sounds like it should be a Tod Browning movie, with its extremely creepy plot, and a real life 15 year-old playing love scenes with a man older than her father, but it is not (it is based on a play by celebrated authors David Belasco and Tom Cushing)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is a Universal Studios negative that was in the camera when their photographer (Bert Longworth) shot the photo. We have put a scan of the negative that shows the "positive image" (in addition to a scan of the negative image). REMEMBER THAT WHAT YOU RECEIVE WILL BE A PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVE, NOT A POSITIVE IMAGE LIKE YOU ARE SEEING. However, we will provide the winning bidder of this auction that positive image scan that is both high quality and not watermarked (on request to the winning bidder, and only the winning bidder). We scanned it, so that bidders could see just how high quality it is. It came in a plastic sleeve and will be sent to the winner of the auction in that. These often (but not always) have retouching on the emulsion side, and negative numbers written in India ink on the front. This camera original negative was purchased by our consignor in Profiles in History "Hollywood Auction 44", where it was lot #787 (the winning bidder will be sent the original "property tag" from Profiles in History, where it was estimated to sell for $1,000 to $1,500), and our consignor paid $1,000 for it (not counting the buyer's premium), but it is being auctioned here with no reserve! Note that we previously auctioned four similar negatives that were also purchased in the same auction in our July Major Auction, and those four sold for prices between $1,766 and $342! Condition: very good. See both of our images to get a sense of the exact condition of this camera original negative. Learn More about condition grades
