An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 43 1/2" x 63" [110 x 160 cm]) (Learn More)

Les Enfants du Paradis (released in the U.S. in 1947 as "Children of Paradise") the classic 1945 Marcel Carne French epic theater performing arts romantic love triangle comedy melodrama (covering many years in the lives of many people, including an actress and a famous mime, and their many interlocking relationships; this is rightly considered in the handful of greatest French movies ever made!) starring Arletty, Jean-Louis Barrault, Pierre Brasseur, Pierre Renoir, and Maria Casares. Note that this movie was made immediately after France was liberated from the Nazis in late 1944, and it premiered in Paris in March of 1945, which makes it all the more remarkable! It did not go into general release in France for an entire year after, in March of 1946. It was then slowly released all over Europe, and it opened in America in November of 1946 and in New York City in February of 1947!

Artist: Eliane Bonabel
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this "Pierre Brassuer" style of French one-panel, which is a "country of origin" poster for this classic French movie, and that was 11 years ago, when it sold for $901!

Note that this poster ships in a very long tube (at least 33" long, but possibly 50" long or more). Therefore the shipping for this poster will be more than that for a poster that ships in a tube 32" or shorter, and possibly much more. Please bear this added shipping expense in mind before bidding on this poster. You can tell how long of a tube this poster needs to ship in by looking at the shorter dimension of its length and width and then adding 4" to that (so a 47" x 63" poster will need to ship in a 51" long tube).
What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster had darkened, typical of examples of this poster and other French posters from this time. It had tiny paper loss at some crossfolds and some tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the folds. It had ink transfer in the top background areas and in the bottom, affecting the title (this surely occurred while it was folded). Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Either before or after the poster was backed (onto a thin linen, with some fold restoration, but nothing done to address the ink transfer), it acquired some additional scattered small stains with what appear to be light water stains scattered down the left blank border. There are some small stains scattered in the lower left and across the bottom. It appears the poster was framed and was attached into the frame with paper tape that was put over the edges of the excess linen and also covering the outer edges of each blank border. Some of that paper tape remains around the edges of each blank border. If I owned this rare and historic poster, I would surely have a professional remove it from the old thin linen and have it properly re-backed. Please bear all of this in mind before bidding on this poster.
