Date Sold 6/9/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Panama, the 1940 Norman Foster Central America Asian detective mystery crime thriller ("One puff from a deadly cigarette... and the fleet is marked for Doom! Can Chan strike fast enough?"; "One minute more... and the fleet is doomed!"; "A plot so fiendishly clever even Chan is astounded!"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Sidney Toler (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Jean Rogers, Lionel Atwill, Mary Nash, Victor Sen Yung (billed as "Sen Yung"), Kane Richmond, Chris-Pin Martin, Lionel Royce, Helen Ericson, Jack La Rue, and Addison Richards. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have only auctioned one in all our years of auctioning and that was in 2006! Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has creases scattered throughout (likely from being compressed while rolled at one time) and there are some creases, smudges and small tears around the edges (partially repaired with tape from the back). There is a v-shaped, jagged tear at lower center in Toler's legs (repaired with tape from the back). There are some smudges and scuffs scattered in various areas. The very rare poster could be displayed as is, or after paperbacking with some restoration it would look great. Learn More about condition grades
