A Hardcover Bound Volume of Original Vintage Comic Books (measures 7 1/2" x 10" [19 x 25 cm]; 312 pages) (Learn More)

Popular Comics, the Dell Publishing comic book series of comic strip reprints featuring characters that had originated in newspaper comic strips. It was published from February 1936 through. Some of the characters include Martan the Marvel Man (a blatant Superman rip-off who started in issue #44, just a year after Superman), The Gumps, Smilin' Jack, Gangbusters, Felix the Cat, and others.
Important Added Info: Note that this bound volume (see below for more on that) includes twelve issues of Popular Comics from #47 to #58, which were published between January 1940 to December 1940. What is especially cool about them is that "Martan the Marvel Man" is featured in all twelve issues. He first appeared in issue #44, but his first cover appearance is on issue #47, which is the first issue in this bound volume! Martan the Marvel Man premiered just one year after Superman, and he has a remarkably similar origin! He came from another planet (but unlike Superman, he was an adult, with his wife!), and they started out as "tourists", but they saw that Earth was in terrible trouble, and they stayed to help save it! We are surprised that Popular Comics was not sued by DC Comics, as Fawcett Comics and Captain Marvel were!

Note that this is a bound volume of twelve Popular Comics comic books published in 1940 by Dell Publishing. Apparently, someone at the company had bound volumes like these created, likely soon after the comics were published. This bound volume has issues #47 to #58. It is one of seven bound volumes of comic books we are currently auctioning, all from the same consignor. He obtained these many decades ago when Dell Publishing was doing some "house cleaning"! The comic books are extremely fragile and darkened around the edges. The covers are not quite as fragile, because they were printed on better paper. It is one of seven bound volumes of comic books we are currently auctioning, all from the same consignor. He obtained these many decades ago when Dell Publishing was doing some "house cleaning"!

Please note that we don't use a "comic guide" grading system, and OUR grading scale is completely different from standard comic book grading. Our "very good" is completely different from a comic book graded "very good". We provide images of the comic book covers, plus 2 interior 2-page spreads, which should allow you to get a sense of the condition of this comic book.

Note: We have 26 images of this bound volume of comic books, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 26 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 16.

Condition: good. The bound volume surely originally contained comic books in excellent condition, but due to how they were stored, they are fragile and brown around the edges. The covers are not nearly as fragile, because they were printed on better paper. Look closely at our images before bidding on this bound volume of very rare comic books.
