An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Reno, the 1939 Norman Foster Nevada Asian detective gambling mystery crime thriller ("Based on the original story 'Death Makes a Decree' by Philip Wylie"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Sidney Toler (as Charlie Chan), Ricardo Cortez, Phyllis Brooks, Slim Summerville, Kane Richmond, Victor Sen Yung (billed as "Sen Yung"), Pauline Moore, Eddie Collins, Kay Linaker, Louise Henry, Robert Lowery, and Charles D. Brown. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have only auctioned one in all our years of auctioning and that was 24 years ago ! Condition: poor to fair. The poster is in much lesser condition. The vertical foldline has completely separated and someone backed it with different types of tape including clear plastic which can be seen in our image. Due to the separation the poster was folded oddly at left and right. There is significant separation in the right center horizontal fold and there is lesser, but still pretty significant separation in some other fold edges and some are repaired with tape from the back. It has some light rippling and slight discoloration scattered in various areas, paper loss at upper right and there are punch holes along the lower vertical foldline. The poster is in need of restoration. Certainly a top restorer can repair the defects described above, and after, the poster could display well, but please bear in mind the rare poster's many defects and the cost of restoration before placing a bid.
