Date Sold 11/22/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) China Seas, the 1935 Tay Garnett Shanghai romantic love triangle high seas action adventure thriller (a pretty wild story of a captain of a steamship bound from China to Shanghai with a cargo of gold, and his floozy girlfriend "China Doll" is along on the voyage, but he meets his former girlfriend, a classy English widow, and he starts romancing her, which makes his girlfriend jealous, so she plots with her buddy to rob the gold, and the captain is almost killed, and the buddy commits suicide, and the widow realizes the captain loves his girlfriend, even though she tried to kill him, so the widow leaves, and the girlfriend is arrested, and the captain philosophically prepares for another voyage!) starring Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, Wallace Beery, Lewis Stone, Rosalind Russell, Dudley Digges, and C. Aubrey Smith. Note that the classy English widow was played by Rosalind Russell. She had been signed by MGM the year before, and had played minor roles in several MGM movies. The following year, she got some starring roles, and she would become one of MGM's leading actresses of the 1940s, and one of their most successful actresses during World War II! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned three examples of this window card, and one of those has been reconsigned to us, so this is still only one of three examples we have ever auctioned! Note that the card measures very slightly under 14" x 22" (an extremely tiny amount in each direction!) and has no left, right, or bottom blank borders, but it has NOT been trimmed (this was done at a time when MGM was experimenting with having as few borders as possible). Condition: very good to fine. The card has tiny tack holes in the borders and slight staining in the top left blank corner. There is slight darkening around the edges and a tiny bit of surface paper loss in the top left corner of the red background. There is a tiny stain in the bottom of the "R" of "BEERY". Other than the above truly minor defects, the card is in excellent condition! Note that some architect used the back of the card to draw a "draft" of a public road in 1935 in pencil, and it covers much of the back of the card. But it has no effect on the front whatsoever, and it is likely the only reason this card survives! Learn More about condition grades
