An Undated (dating from 1930 to 1935; see below) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French Large Movie Poster (31x47; measures 29 3/4" x 43 1/2" [76 x 110 cm]) (Learn More) Les Miserables, the 1925 (released in the U.S. in 1927; the first part was released as "Souls of Humanity" [Les Miserables Part I]) Henri Fescourt French France epic romantic crime melodrama ("Victor Hugo's Immortal Drama"; "Hugo's famous characters come to vivid life! Greatest dramatic screen achievement in years!"; "The Universal Film de France Triumph"; "Over 5,000 people in 6,000 gigantic scenes!"; based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo) starring Gabriel Gabrio (as Jean Valjean), Paul Jorge, Sandra Milovanoff (as both Fantine AND the adult Cosette), Andree Rolane (as Cosette as a child), Jean Toulout (as Javert), Francois Rozet (as Marius), Paul Guide (as Enjolras), Charles Badiole (as Gavroche), and Suzanne Nivette (as Eponine). Note that there had been an earlier silent version of this movie in 1913, but this was a gigantic production, running 6 hours long (some sourcess say 4 1/2 hours)! When it first premiered, it was shown in two separate parts, as two entirely separate movies (similar to "Kill Bill Vol. 1" and "Kill Bill Vol. 2"). After its first release, it was shown in four parts in France, and it premiered in the U.S. in 1926 and went into general release in 1927 in a condensed feature version that still ran 3 hours long! If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Artist: Henri Florit Important Added Info: Note that this poster, which is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie, is a re-release from the early 1930s. We know it to surely be from between 1930 and 1935, because it has a "Pathe-Natan" logo at top right. This was a giant movie for Pathe in 1925, but in 1930, Pathe was bought by Bernard Natan, a Romanian-Jewish emigre, who had a colorful past in France (including supposedly making perhaps the first "adult" movie ever, in 1911!). Even though it was the height of The Depression, Natan made Pathe super profitable, but he entered into so many ambitious deals that Pathe collapsed in bankruptcy over its obligations in 1935, even though it was still technically making a lot of money. Sadly, Natan was convicted of fraud and imprisoned in 1939. In 1941, after the Nazis occupied France, he was tried yet again, and was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he died. He made many major contributions to the development of the film industry both in France and worldwide, and perhaps some day a movie will be made of his life, possibly starring Johnny Depp! So we know that this movie was re-released in France between 1930 and 1935, more likely towards the beginning of those years, and quite possibly 1930, when it still would have made sense to give a silent movie a major re-release.
