An Original 1948 (from the first release of this movie in the U.K.) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked English Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Laura Z. Hobson's Gentleman's Agreement, the 1947 Elia Kazan (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) investigation-of-anti-Semitism melodrama ("Produced by Darryl F. Zanuck"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; about a reporter who pretends to be Jewish in order to cover a story on anti-Semitism and personally discovers the depth of bigotry and hatred, even in otherwise "decent" people) starring Gregory Peck (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Dorothy McGuire (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), John Garfield (he was a major star at the time, but he was Jewish, and he took a small role in this movie as a Jewish man who endures prejudice, because of how deeply he believed in what it was saying!), Celeste Holm (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Anne Revere (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), June Havoc, Albert Dekker, Jane Wyatt, and Dean Stockwell NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this poster, and that was 8 years ago. The buyer of that poster had it linenbacked and has now reconsigned it to us, so this is still the only example we have ever auctioned! Also note that after this movie won major Academy Awards, its English distributors printed a new set of posters highlighting its awards, so surely that makes these pre-awards posters even more rare (most English posters from the 1940s are already very rare!). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had some tiny surface paper loss on the folds and many smudges, scuffs, and stains around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
