She is best remembered for starring in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and Marnie. She is also the mother of actress Melanie Griffith. In 1971, she was making a movie that involved a lion, and she learned of their poor treatment, which began her devotion to wild animals. In 1981, she spent $17 million to film the movie "Roar", about the treatment of big cats, and it only took in $2 million at the box office. She has devoted all the years since to helping wild animals. As of 2022, she is still alive at the age of 92!
