An Autographed 3" x 5" [8 x 13 cm] Index Card (Learn More)

Jose Ferrer was born Jose Vicente Ferrer de Otero y Cintron in Puerto Rico in 1912. He went to Princeton, and after graduation became an actor, starring in the oft-made cross-dressing hit, Charley's Aunt on Broadway in 1940. In 1943 he played Iago to Paul Robeson's Othello, and that proved to be the longest-running production of a Shakespeare play ever in the U.S. (and little wonder, with two of the finest actors who ever lived, in one of the greatest plays). Ferrer starred as Cyrano de Bergerac on Broadway in 1946, and he was perfect as Rostand's tragic hero with the huge nose, and he repeated the role in the 1949 TV version of the play, and again in the 1950 movie version (for which he won the Best Actor Oscar), and he directed himself in another Broadway version in 1953, and appeared in yet another TV version in 1953! He even provided the voice for a 1974 animated version. Little wonder he is so closely connected to this character in almost everyone's mind. He has two other extremely memorable film roles. One was as Toulouse-Lautrec in Moulin Rouge (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film, as the famous diminutive artist Toulouse-Lautrec; Ferrer played the entire movie on his knees, with his legs strapped to the back of his thighs), and as the lawyer who interrogates Humphrey Bogart's Captain Queeg in The Caine Mutiny. Personally I love watching Ferrer in anything he did, whether as Alfred Dreyfus in I Accuse or as Abe Fortas in Gideon's Trumpet. His speaking voice is unequaled, and is instantly recognizable. When Richard Kiley, who originated the role of Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha left that part on Broadway, Ferrer took over for him, and I wish someone had filmed that performance, for while I saw Kiley on Broadway, I missed seeing Ferrer, and I am certain I missed a great performance! Ferrar was married four times, and had one child with noted dramatic teacher Uta Hagen, and had five children with actress Rosemary Clooney. One of those children Miguel Ferrer is also an actor, appearing quite often on TV, and in a few movies, and he bears a striking resemblance to his father. Jose passed away in 1992 at the age of 80.
Important Added Info: This index card has been personally autographed (signed) by Jose Ferrer! The index card could be matted with a vintage or repro still and framed together to make a cool display!

Note that this autographed item is part of a remarkable collection. In each of our last several all-signed auctions, we auctioned hundreds of items from this collection and now we are auctioning many signed index cards (plus many signed photos and miscellaneous other signed items that have a different note on those)!
In the 1970s, our consignor was a teacher who taught a film class, and he also part-time ran the local movie theater (and he saved all the presskits from the movies the theater showed).
Starting in the late 1970s through the late 1980s, he wrote to famous celebrities, and enclosed an 8x10 from his collection (or sometimes a different size photo or other item), and he wrote a literate personalized letter, talking about his work as a film teacher, and discussing his favorite movie by that star.
See our other note with the other signed items from this consignor for more about how he acquired them. But in additional to sending photos and other items with images of the star, he would also enclose an index card, and mention that the star could sign the index card if they didn't want to sign the photo. He found that many, many stars would sign both! This auction is for one of many index cards which he received back from the celebrities who he had written to.
He of course does not have any "Certificates of Authenticity", but he only kept ones he felt were surely authentic, and those are the ones we are auctioning. However, bidders can certainly compare the signatures to known examples on the internet to judge for themselves.

As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes.

Condition: very good to fine.
