An Unfolded German Advertising Poster (measures 33" x 36 3/4" [84 x 93 cm]) (Learn More) Der Stern (literally translates to "The Star") was a German magazine that was published from September 1938 to December 1939. On the surface, it was unpolitical and focused on film, culture, women, glamour and fashion (like the U.S. "Life" magazine). However, the publisher was also a war correspondent in the propaganda unit of the German Wehrmacht. In the April 1933 issue, it featured Adolf Hitler on the cover along with three women in evening dresses, and the caption "The leader in the circle of artists". However, it was too subtle in its propaganda, and the Nazis ordered it to cease publication, and replaced it with a soldiers magazine, "Erika", which was completely pro-Nazi propaganda. Nine years after it ceased publication in 1939, a new magazine, called Stern, appeared, and while the publishers claimed it had no connection to the Nazi publication, there is some strong evidence to the contrary (and the logos of the two magazines are very similar). If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster is one of a remarkable collection of 46 pre-World War II German posters that we were consigned (and we are auctioning them in 46 separate auctions). They date from the 1880s to the late 1930s, but most are from the 1920s and 1930s. Posters from this time period are extremely scarce, due to the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II. Many of these posters are for specific events that were held, and naturally, those posters would figure to be even more rare, since they could only have been used prior to the date of the event. This is a rare opportunity to purchase these extremely rare posters! Condition: very good to fine. The poster was never folded. Someone put some tape on the back of the entire top border where there had been a few small tears, and that tape has bled through to the front, but only in the blank border. Overall, it has likely survived in about as nice condition as one could hope, with a poster of this age and size! Learn More about condition grades
