An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian Movie Poster (measures 39 1/4" x 82 1/2" [100 x 210 cm]) (Learn More) L'Amazzone Mascherata (released in the U.S. in 1915 as "The Woman Who Dared"), the 1914 Baldassarre Negroni Italian silent crime circus melodrama (about a man who is charged with espionage by a spy who frames him, and the man is found guilty, but his wife figures out who the spy was, and she sets out to clear her husband; she is an incredible equestrian [with what is described as Amazonian riding abilities], and that allows her to join a circus as "The Masked Amazon", and she engineers a meeting with the spy, and forces him to give her the evidence that clears her husband!) starring Francesca Bertini (in the title role), Alberto Collo, Emilio Ghione, Leda Gys, and Teresa Martini. Note that this movie was made just prior to World War I, and the impending war was already on everyone's mind, so movies about enemy agents stealing secrets were very popular. But this movie was a feature length film made a year before "The Birth of a Nation", and its heroic central character is a woman, and she is not rescued by a man, but instead does the rescuing! In the early 1910s, the Italians were way ahead of the rest of the world in making feature films, but sadly, they lost that advantage during World War I and never returned to their former glory. But movies like this are a testament to how important Italy was to the birth of the cinema. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Italian poster, which is a "country of origin" poster for this Italian movie (and we have never auctioned any other movie paper item from any release of this movie or from any country)! It had some light staining scattered in the green background areas at top. But otherwise, the poster only had minor fold and border wear and has survived in surprisingly good condition, especially since it is over a century old! The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
