A 1936 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28 1/2" x 41 1/4" [72 x 105 cm]) (Learn More) The Black King, the 1932 Bud Pollard black African American musical religious comedy romantic love triangle melodrama (a truly wild story of a black Deacon named Charcoal Johnson who gains control of a Mississippi church after the old Deacon dies under mysterious circumstances, and he starts a "back to Africa" movement, and gains great power and followers, mostly plantation workers who dream of being their own bosses, but then he is forced out after having an affair with a local woman; he turns up with her in Oklahoma where he has virtually taken over an all-black town, and he has declared himself the "Emperor of the United States of Africa", and he tells his followers that there is an African country that will accept them and give them land and money, and he is exposed at the last minute when it is revealed that there is no such country in Africa!) starring A.B. DeComathiere, Vivianne Baber, Knolly Mitchell, Dan Michaels, Mike Jackson, and Lorenzo Tucker. Note that this movie is based on a real life person, Marcus Garvey, who was the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, and who was convicted of fraud in 1925 and was deported to his native Jamaica following the commutation of his sentence by President Calvin Coolidge! Also note that this is a movie with a very murky history! It seems that it was made by a tiny company called Southland Pictures in 1932, and that they intended to make a series of all-black movies, but when this movie failed, it was the end of Southland Pictures. It is unclear if they ever actually released it, and if so, under what name (Empire Inc. may have been the working title, and Harlem Hot Shot may have been the 1932 release title, or intended release). At some point, Sack Amusement Enterprises gained the rights to it and distributed it, and this could have been in 1932, or it could have been in the mid or late 1930s. Apparently, Toddy Pictures gained the rights to it in the 1940s, and we don't know what title they might have released it under, because we have never seen a Toddy poster from this movie! To make it even more complicated, the states' rights to the movie were sold to a bunch of minor companies who may or may not have made posters for it. The IMDb has a ton of contradictory information about this, and much of it seems like it may be wrong. If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds. There was a 3" vertical tear in the right of the middle foldline and some pretty minor wear on the folds. There were some extra creases below the bottom foldline and some smudges and scuffs scattered in the image. There were pinholes in the corners and some smudges and small tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
