An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style D One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Her Cardboard Lover, the 1942 George Cukor romantic love triangle gambling comedy ("Playing with love is risky, but such fun!"; about a wealthy woman who hires a broke gambler to pretend to be her lover to put off a suitor, but then he actually falls in love with her) starring Norma Shearer (in her final screen appearance), Robert Taylor, George Sanders, Frank McHugh, Elizabeth Patterson, and Chill Wills. Note that Shearer remarried in 1942 after being widowed by Irving Thalberg in 1936, and retired after completing this film.
NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this style D one-sheet is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned it before! Oddly, we have had four examples of the style C one-sheet, which does not show the cool cardboard man, as this poster does!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had a small circular hole in Shearer's upper lip, entering the edge of her mouth, and a stain in the bottom of the second "A" of "CARDBOARD" in the title. It also had many small tears scattered down the vertical fold, with small paper loss at each crossfold, and some slight darkening on parts of the folds and in the edges of the borders, as well as some smudges in the background areas. It had some fine surface paper loss on the horizontal folds and pinholes in the corners. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone mounted the poster onto linen without performing any restoration. If I owned this extremely rare poster, I would surely have it removed from the old linen and properly re-backed. Bear in mind the poster's condition defects and the cost of additional restoration before bidding on it.
