Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the classic 1939 William Dieterle romantic love triangle horror melodrama ("Ten times a thousand thrills!"; "BIG beyond words! ...Wondrous beyond belief! ...Magnificent beyond compare!"; adapted from the novel by Victor Hugo) starring Charles Laughton (in the title role as Quasimodo, the hunchback), Cedric Hardwicke (billed as "Sir Cedric Hardwicke"; as Frollo), Thomas Mitchell, Maureen O'Hara (as Esmerelda), Edmond O'Brien (as Gringoire, the poet), Alan Marshal, Walter Hampden, Katharine Alexander, Harry Davenport, Helene Whitney, Katherine Alexander, George Zucco, Fritz Leiber, Etienne Girardot, Minna Gombell, Arthur Hohl, George Tobias, Rod La Rocque, and Spencer Charters. Note that this was a wonderful sound remake of the classic 1923 silent movie starring Lon Chaney Sr. and Patsy Ruth Miller in the lead roles.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had creases and scuffs on the foldlines and some smudges and stains in the top area, where a snipe had once been glued over the play dates that were printed there. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and a talented restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster).
