Date Sold 11/23/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Window Card (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Old Ironsides, the 1926 James Cruze silent American-fighting-ship-battling-Barbary-pirates-in-the-Mediterranean romantic adventure melodrama ("A stirring story of the sea.... The most costly film made thus far."; "The thrill of a lifetime"; "Story by Laurence Stallings"; about the famous U.S. battleship, The Constitution, that was nicknamed "Old Ironsides"; the movie is a highly fictionalized account of the Battle of Tripoli Harbor, where pirates captured American ships and took them prisoners; the famous phrase "Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute" is often falsely attributed to this confrontation, and while it wasn't said at that time, the sentiment applies) starring Charles Farrell, Esther Ralston, Wallace Beery, George Bancroft, and Charles Hill Mailes NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned two different styles of window cards created for this movie (both of which solely showed artwork of the ship), but we have NEVER before auctioned THIS style, which has a completely different image with the top stars! Note that all three window cards have differences in the Paramount billing at bottom, which would indicate they were not from the exact same time. We know that this movie was a giant hit and likely played for at least a couple of years, and those three window cards likely were created over a three year period (and the handwriting at the top of this card correlates to 1928, but of course, it can be a 1926 card that was reused in 1928). For now, we are leaving all three window cards as being from 1926, but if we learn any more, we will update that. Condition: good to very good. The card had some tiny paper loss in parts of the borders and a partial crease across the center. Someone long ago mounted it to a piece of foamcore before framing it, but did no restoration, and it has almost no defects in the image area. Learn More about condition grades
