He served as a U.S. Representative from Arizona from 1961 to 1991, and was noted for his liberal views, his height (6'5"), and self-deprecating wit and easy manner. Udall sought the Democratic nomination in the 1976 presidential election, but was defeated by Jimmy Carter. Because of his wit, columnist James J.
