An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 24 1/2" x 33 1/2" [62 x 85 cm]) (Learn More) Veille d'armes (released in the U.S. in 1938 as "Before the Battle"), the 1935 Marcel L'Herbier French romantic World War I Naval courtroom legal lawyer melodrama (a very complicated, but interesting story of a French passenger ship sailing in World War I, and the captain is on a secret mission for the French government, which endangers all the passengers, and in fact, the ship is sunk by the Germans, after which the captain is put on trial, and much is told in flashback at the trial; apparently the film is excellent, except that the filmmakers felt a need to have a romantic subplot, to increase viewership, which interfered with the main plot of the film) starring Annabella, Victor Francen, Gabriel Signoret (billed as "Signoret"), Pierre Renoir, Rosine Derean, and Robert Vidalin NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare "pre-War" Belgian poster. Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had minor wear on the folds. It had paper loss in the top right blank corner and tiny pinholes in the other three corners. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and a talented restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster).
