A 1965 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian One-Panel (known in Italy as a "2 Fogli") Movie Poster (1p; measures 39" x 55" [99 x 140 cm]) (Learn More) Cole Porter's Can-Can, the 1960 Walter Lang France singing-and-dancing romantic musical ("Now at popular prices! Continuous performances! THE GREATEST ENTERTAINMENT SHOW! UNCUT! INTACT! Exactly as it ran for over a year in the major capitals of the world!"; with music by Cole Porter; based on the play by Abe Burrows) starring Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine, Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jourdan, and Juliet Prowse (in her first movie role; she was in the Juliet Prowse Trio dancing in Rome, Italy, and MGM choreographer Hermes Pan saw her and recommended she be cast in the role of Shirley MacLaine's sister in this movie!). Note that, as noted above, the movie played in a very limited "roadshow" release for a full year in "the major capitals of the year", before it had a wide release to "regular" theaters. The version that played in those capitals of the world was in TODD-AO, but that version was not used for the wide release. So none of the regular U.S. posters have "TODD-AO" on them, because new posters were created for the wide release, and whatever posters were used in the few U.S. cities for the TODD-AO release either no longer exist or may have been individually made. We have seen a Japanese poster and a Spanish language poster with "TODD-AO" on it, and we were recently consigned a British quad that has "TODD-AO" at the top, but has a snipe over it, indicating it was used for the wide release in England. If anyone has ever seen any other posters with TODD-AO, especially a U.S. one, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that it is difficult to accurately date Italian posters, and some unmarked re-release posters can be extremely difficult to distinguish from first releases, so please bear that in mind before you place a bid. We used our best information to date this poster, but we can't always guarantee that the Italian posters we sell are not from an unmarked re-release, but this will only prove to be true in a very tiny number of cases. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss at some crossfolds and some creases, tears, and tiny paper loss on parts of some foldlines. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer linenbacked the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did little restoration to the defects described above (a restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster).
