An Original Vintage Linenbacked French Magazine Centerfold (measures 15" x 22 1/4") (Learn More)

Derriere Le Miroir (literally translates to "Behind the Mirror"), the French magazine that was published starting in 1946. The magazine was published by Aime and Marguerite Maeght, who wanted to expose the general French public to lesser known artists. They printed 10,000 copies of the first issue, and sold them widely, but sales were poor, and they soon cut down the print run to 1,500 copies. Some issues were the catalog for exhibitions of specific artists, and some covered multiple artists. Some artists created lithographs specifically for this magazine. It changed format several times over the years. When they were approaching issue #250, they planned on doing a special issue paying tribute to all those who had contributed to the magazine over the years, but before that could happen, Aime Maeght died, and the issue became a tribute to the Maeghts! The final issue was #253 in 1982.
Artist: Saul Steinberg
Important Added Info: Note that someone obtained issue #192 of this magazine (the June 1971 issue). They took the covers and linenbacked them together, and also a 2-page center spread and linenbacked those together. We are auctioning each of those two linenbacked items in two separate auctions.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. There was a faint diagonal crease in the top right corner, in the light background area, and some smudges in the top center. Overall, the centerfold was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. At some point after the cover was backed, it was roughly handled, and there are now two long diagonal creases in the middle left, one of which extends to the left edge (see our image).
