An Original Vintage Unfolded Dutch Movie Poster (measures 25 1/2" x 42 1/2" [65 x 108 cm]) (Learn More) Maciste Imperatore (literally translates to "Emperor Maciste"), the 1924 Guido Brignone Italian silent sword-and-sandal adventure sequel starring Bartolomeo Pagano (in the title role as Maciste), Elena Sangro, Domenico Gambino, Franz Sala, and Lola Romano. Note that Maciste is one of the oldest recurring characters in cinema, created by Gabriele d'Annunzio and Giovanni Pastrone. He cuts a heroic figure throughout the history of the cinema of Italy from the 1910s to the 1960s. He is usually depicted as a Hercules-like figure, utilizing his massive strength to achieve heroic feats that ordinary men cannot. Many of the 1960s Italian films featuring Maciste were re-titled in other countries, substituting more popular names in the titles (such as Hercules, Goliath or Samson). If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned two examples of this poster before! It is a Dutch poster that is a linocut poster (like a woodcut, but created from a piece of linoleum, which is then reproduced, just as a woodcut is). This was popular with Dutch posters in the early 1920s, and we think there is a good chance this poster is the work of Joop van den Berg, who was one of the well-known designers of film posters in the 1920s and 1930s, but we can't say for certain. The poster has two paper snipes glued to the bottom. Both were likely taken from a handbill-like poster created to promote Riozzi's Bioscoop (Riozzi's Cinema). We have seen an example of a very similar handbill on the Internet, and we think that those snipes were added to the poster so that people would know what theater the movie was playing at. Condition: good. The poster was never folded. It has two paper snipes glued to the bottom, telling what theater it was playing at (see above). The poster has darkened somewhat, and it has some stains around the edges, with masking tape on the back of the borders (and at lower right where there is a corner tear).
