Date Sold 6/30/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded World War I Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 41 1/4" [70 x 105 cm]) (Learn More) Lend The Way They Fight, the 1918 U.S. World War I (WWI) War Bond poster ("Buy Bonds to your utmost") encouraging people to invest in war bonds. The message is that soldiers are fighting to their absolute limit, and that civilians must support them by buying bonds to their absolute limit. Note that we are aware of two versions of this poster. One has art by E.M. Ashe showing a U.S. soldier standing over a German trench with a grenade in his hand, and the other is solely text (but that one references "Liberty Bonds", while the artwork one does not). If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters! Condition: fair. The poster was originally folded and someone mounted it onto a very thin linen, with no excess. Either before or after it was backed, it acquired many stains, tears, and areas of paper loss around the edges, but mostly in the blank borders, and also some creases and stains scattered throughout (see our image). Any talented restorer could remove this poster from the old linen and properly re-back it, but bear this in mind before placing a bid on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
