He gained fame as the drummer for English pop rock 'n' roll (rock and roll) band "Genesis" and then became the lead singer following the departure of original frontman Peter Gabriel (the band members first conducted a long search for Gabriel's replacement, refusing to realize that the perfect replacement was already in the band!). He launched his solo career in 1981 and went on to be one of the most successful singer-songwriters ever.
